  • Advocates frugality
  • Sells products that aid frugal living  (See the Advertising article of this newsletter for details.)

Flour Power

That fine, white powder is great for more than just cookies.  Flour has some wonderful properties:

  • Use it as a mild abrasive for polishing stainless steel sinks, silver and other soft metals. (Equal parts flour, vinegar and salt work for copper and brass.)
  • Rub a little on the scalp and shake it out to absorb oil; you might be able to skip a shower for another day.
  • Ants won't cross a flour line.
  • Shake some playing cards in a bag of flour to remove excess oil and stickiness from fingers.
  • A paste made with flour and water makes the perfect non-toxic craft glue for young children.
  • Make a more watery paste and add food coloring to make finger paint.
  • Oh no!  Did you just get something greasy on your clothing?  Let a bit of flour sit on it and absorb the oil.

August Specials

Of course, most produce is nice and cheap this time of year, thanks to the warm weather gracing local farms!

Be on the look-out for good deals on office supplies now that Back-to-School season begins in earnest.  Coupons may come in the mail to sweeten the incentive to stock up. Buy enough now to last all year.

Dairy is going to start getting expensive again soon, if there's room in the freezer, grab some extra butter at least...

August "Lazy Daze" Edition

rosehips 2I seem to be accomplishing about a tenth of what I do in other months of the year. It's just so nice to sit by a pool and read...

Good thing there isn't much to do in the garden this month.  I just have to drag my lazy self out there with a colander about once a day to say "hi!" to the chickens and collect what's ripe: string beans, tomatoes, grapes, onions, squash, apples, and still lots and lots of herbs.  I try to remember to thaw some piece of meat to go with all the veggies for dinner.  And then it's back to my book.  Life is good!

Not all that reading is a total waste, though.  I'm looking at how to make the Simpleton Solutions website more dynamic, easier to search for pertinent topics of tightwad interest, and even how to make the site and applications smartphone-friendly  It may take a while, but we want Simpleton Solutions to be the GO TO place for serious savers!

Simpleton Solutions Mascot Name...

mascotredborder

Last month, we announced a contest to name our poor little mascot here, who's been anonymous since Simpleton Solutions first got started in July 2008.

Well many thanks to Meg Vollema for dubbing him "Simon" because he's well, simple.  (And he probably likes pie, too.)

Congrats, Meg!  I'll be in touch to find out which book you'd like!

Does It Pay to Advertise?

composttumblerIt happens fairly often now, that Simpleton Solutions gets requests to link or otherwise advertise another product or site on the website.  In return, we're promised PR of our own, or, in the case of Google AdSense, money.

We like money and PR as much as the next business, but there's the question of Simpleton Solutions' integrity that goes beyond a revenue stream.  We feel that the root of the US economic troubles is that we've all over-consumed and under-saved.  Our little company is dedicated to helping us all find ways to Live Large on Less.  How does it look to have random commercial product recommendations on the same page?

Does this mean we hate capitalism or something?  May it never be!  Simpleton Solutions certainly advertises its products, usually through word-of-mouth, but also on-line and in print.  The difference is that Simpleton Solutions products are aimed to save the buyer much much more money than he spent on our book.  We guarantee it, or your money back!

Are there links to products other than ours on the Simpleton Solutions website?  Sure!  These are purchases we deem consistent with our goal of endorsing creative frugality.

If your product is frugal-friendly, feel free to let us know.  If we like it, we'll definitely recommend it!

Last Month's Articles

This summer seemed as good a time as any to talk about a commodity even more valuable than money: TIME.  To that end, we put together a series devoted to tried-and-true strategies and techniques for paring down the To Do List.  It's a six-part series in her Examiner.com column, and it's called: How to Get Stuff Done.

And one more money and resource-saving article:

Ways to Use Less Water at Home

Summer's Ending, Get Some Seeds!

Yes, seriously. Just as the stores
are all getting rid of their stocks
of seeds from this year's growing season,
you should be building up your stash.
Get some for next year's early indoor starts,
and if you're able to grow cool-season
plants into the Fall and Winter,
buy some of those, too.
